South Africa tour of India- February 2010 Schedule
South Africa tour of India early in year 2010 was supposed to be a full tour with series of test matches, one day internationals and twenty20s but Indian premier League season 3, which will be played in month of March, has shorted South Africa’s visit to India.
Initially, Indian cricket board (BCCI) set a schedule of simple 5 ODI series against South Africa but recently when India became the world number 1 test match team in ICC rankings, BCCI changed their mind and asked Cricket South Africa (CSA) to play 3 ODI series and a 2 test match series.
Note that India and South Africa are world number 1 and 2 teams in longest format of cricket and whoever wins this 2 test match series, will stabilise themselves at top of ICC chart.
The India v South Africa one day internationals will be played at Jaipur, the venue that lost out on India v Sri Lanka due to tussle between BCCI and Rajasthan cricket board, Green Park stadium in Kanpour and Motera stadium in Ahmedabad.
The India v South Africa test matches this year 2010 will be played at VCA stadium in Nagpur which has been on BCCI’s favorite venues in last couple of years and at Eden gardens in Kolkata, India’s biggest venue that last hosted a test match back in 2007.
Note that South Africans also play a two day practice game at Nagpur to acclimatize to conditions before International games.

BioWare Launches Mass Effect 2

Ford launches Ikon Plus in India
Ford India has launched a new variant of its car Ikon. Branded as Ford Ikon Plus , the sedan is priced in the range of Rs 5.17-5.77 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). The car is available in both petrol and diesel versions. “The new variant is a follow up to the response witnessed on the Ikon iKool last year. , ” said Ford India in a press release.

Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi
Every year, Indian automobile journalists from different auto enthusiast magazines come together to rate the best cars and motorcycles of the year. This year was no different, and the motorcycle that walked away with the honours is the Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi. The magazines that participated were Auto India, Autocar India, B S Motoring, Bike India, Overdrive and Top Gear India.
The Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi was Indian Motorcycle of the Year for being India’s first high-performance sports bike to feature fuel injection, apart from other technical innovations such as oil cooler, tubeless tyres, clip on handlebars, digital speedo, LED tail lamps, gas charged rear shock absorbers and front and rear disc brakes.
The Bajaj Pulsar 220 was picked for being the major player in the performance biking space in the country. Technology, styling, brilliant dynamics and amazing value have given the Pulsar 220 all it wanted to be the chosen one, according to the expert jury.
The Indian Motorcycle of the Year 2008 award proved that it bore the stamp of the choice of expert motoring scribes from across all major automobile mags. The journalists who formed the jury were Rishad Cooper (Autocar India), Aspi Bhathena (Bike India), Shubhabrata Marmar (BS Motoring), Sirish Chandran (Overdrive) and Girish Karkera (Top Gear India).
While zeroing in on the winner the jury had judged the motorbikes on various parameters such as price, fuel efficiency, design, comfort, safety, maneuverability, performance, functionality, environmental responsibility and rider satisfaction among others. In addition, technical innovation and value for money were particularly important factors while deciding on the winner, the sources added. The shortlist included the Bajaj XCD125 DTS-Si, Bajaj 200DTS-i, Bajaj 220 DTS-i, Bajaj Avenger 200 DTS-i, Bajaj Discover 135 DTS-i, Hero Honda Hunk, Hero Honda Splendor NXG, REML Bullet 500 LB and TVS Apache 160 RTR.

Tata Nano wins at Bloomberg UTV-Autocar awards
Tata Motor’s wonder car Nano has won the “car of the year” award at the Bloomberg UTV-Autocar Awards 2010 , while the best selling bike Bajaj Pulsar 135 4v has bagged the “bike of the year” award. Skoda Laura won the “best variant of the year” award , while BMW Z4 won the “best driver’s car” award. Honda CB1000R was given the “import bike of the year” award.
The jury member of the award included Manwendra Singh , automobile historian , Dilip Chhabria , car designer and Hormazd Sorabjee , Autocar India editor. “The Autocar awards honour unmatched excellence in the automobile industry. It is awarded after a meticulous selection procedure by some of the best names in the country , ” said MK Anand , CEO , Bloomberg UTV.

Heart can be repaired through the wrist
For the first time, cardiologists at the University of Illinois and Jesse Brown VA medical centers have repaired an ailing heart by clearing blocked arteries via the wrist. Called trans-radial angiography, the approach might lead to reduced patient complications and recovery time and decreased hospital costs. The cardiologists offered the approach to heart angiograms and clearing blocked arteries.
In the procedure, a catheter is threaded through the small radial artery in the wrist rather than the larger femoral artery in the groin. “It’’s a simple change that has a dramatic impact on the experience and recovery of the patient,” said Dr. Adhir Shroff, assistant professor of cardiology at UIC.
The trans-radial approach can reduce bleeding— the most common complication, particularly among women and the elderly— to under 1 percent. It also eliminates much of the discomfort associated with the procedure. After a standard angiogram and angioplasty through the femoral artery, the patient needs to lie still on his or her back for four to six hours. Shroff said that this can be very uncomfortable for elderly patients with back problems and walking can be uncomfortable for days.
On the other hand, patients who have the procedure done via the wrist can immediately sit up, eat, and walk without pain, said Shroff. “The issue is really just the learning-curve. The change requires dozens of small changes — everything from redesigning the sterile drape so that the openings are at the wrist rather than the leg and finding smaller needles, wires and catheters to the way the table is set up,” said Shroff.

Each pound at birth lowers risk of developing TB
The more a newborn weighs, the better its chances of being protected from tuberculosis (TB), according to a new study that says that every pound decreases the risk of developing the disease later in life. University of Michigan (U-M) researchers looked at how much protection additional birth weight adds against developing TB years later.
They found that every 1.1 pound of birth weight decreases the risk of developing TB later by 46 percent among identical twins. The findings are important because TB infects about a third of the planet’s population, and is second only to HIV in deaths caused by a single infection.
The link between birth weight and developing TB is much stronger for males than females, who are only about 16 percent less likely to develop TB for every 1.1 pound (500 grams) of birth weight, said Eduardo Villamor, study author. Villamor, associate professor at the U-M School of Public Health, said the risk decreased by 87 percent for infant males with each pound.
Low birth weight of babies is a larger problem in developing countries, but it occurs everywhere, he said, according to a U-M release. Villamor worked with colleagues at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and began the research while at Harvard. The study is slated for publication in the February edition of Infectious Disease.

Honda unveils small car concept
Luxury car maker Honda has unveiled a small car concept at the ongoing Auto Expo in New Delhi. The car is called ‘New Small’ as of now. The car has sleek and futuristic design that stands out in a crowd of small cars.
The small car of Honda is likely to be launched in 2011. “Our choice of India for the world premiere of this vehicle demonstrates both the importance of the Indian market for Honda and our commitment to it. With a compact body , it is designed for easy driving in the City , while it offers cabin space for five people , ” said Koichi Kondo , Executive Vice-President and Representative Director , Honda Motor Co.
The Honda small car will be priced below Rs 5 lakh. “Our new car will be positioned below the Jazz and yet it will pack in all the attributes that our customers expect from Honda , ” said Janeshwar Sen , Senior General Manager , Honda Siel Car India. The small car will be manufactured at Greater Noida factory of the company. Honda has also showcased CR-Z hybrid concept at the Auto Expo.
